A custom Furisode Higanbana

I really love when a kimono design becomes a starting point rather than a finished idea.

This time, the client chose my Furisode Higanbana kimono, but asked for one change: she wanted the background replaced with an asanoha pattern.

I honestly love how this turned out.

The Higanbana flowers are quite expressive on their own, while the background brings a more structured, geometric feel to the design. The two patterns work surprisingly well together and give the kimono a slightly different look from the original version.

Asanoha is a traditional Japanese pattern based on the shape of hemp leaves. It’s one of those motifs that you can see everywhere in Japanese textiles, and I really enjoy using it in my kimono designs.

This is also one of my favourite things about making custom kimonos - you don't always need to change the whole design to make it yours. Sometimes changing one element, like the background pattern, is enough.

So this furisode Higanbana is now a one-of-a-kind version, made specifically for its owner.

If you’ve seen a kimono in my shop that you love but wish it had a different colour, pattern or detail, feel free to get in touch. Custom versions are possible, and I’m always happy to see what we can create together.
